Stony Brook Medicine Women’s Health Services includes a number of specialties in which our physicians are experts in conditions that only affect women or manifest differently in women. They bring a woman-centered approach to interpreting symptoms, making diagnoses, prescribing medications, initiating treatment, and performing surgery and other interventions.
This is a highly individualized and specialized approach that takes into account each woman’s physical and emotional needs. Many of our physicians are among the first in Suffolk County to perform pioneering minimally invasive procedures that help return women to their day-to-day lives sooner, and with fewer complications.
Because so many body systems in women are interconnected, our physicians often work as a team (especially with female pelvic floor reconstruction), combining expertise in urogynecology, gynecology/oncology, plastic surgery, oncology, dermatology and gastroenterology for optimal outcomes.
Some of our leading female-focused specialties include:
Urogynecology — Includes physicians specializing in female incontinence. Learn about our Women's Pelvic Health & Continence Center.
Colorectal/Gastrointestinal (GI) — Includes specialists in colorectal and GI surgery
Female Pelvic Medicine — Includes three experts in disorders of the pelvic floor and one physician specializing in vaginal/minimally invasive female pelvic floor reconstruction and repair. Learn about our Women's Pelvic Health & Continence Center.
Pediatric/Adolescent Gynecology — Includes physicians specializing in adolescent gynecological health, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs); gynecologist/oncologists with advanced training in how gynecological cancers manifest in teens; and specialists in pediatric gynecology including, anatomy issues and anomalies, ambiguous genitalia, ovarian masses, uterine anomalies and more. In addition, these physicians are trained in pediatric and adolescent emotional and developmental issues, and can speak to patients in an age-appropriate, approachable manner.
Gynecologic Sonography — Including 3D ultrasound. Tests are performed by obstetric/gynecologists (not technologists, not radiologists) to bring the female-centered perspective and integrate the clinical aspects of the test results into treatment faster. Our sonography services are certified by the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine.
Minimally Invasive/Laparoscopic/Robotic Assisted Surgery — For benign and cancerous conditions, including female genital tract disorders, hysterectomy, advanced endometriosis, fibroids, polyps and abnormal bleeding. Stony Brook was the first hospital in Suffolk County and one of the first in the area to use the robotic platform for these surgeries, and is now a training center for other physicians in the community. Screening Services — For cervical, breast and endometrial cancers, including a groundbreaking type of Pap test developed at Stony Brook and now being piloted worldwide that can identify the particular abnormalities that could lead to cancer.
Infectious Disease — Stony Brook is a New York State-designated HIV-AIDS center for Suffolk County and the recipient of a grant from the New York State Department of Health to provide state-of-the-art treatment to patients with HIV in the obstetric (and other) population. The center works closely with the Division of Neonatology to minimize the risk of fetal transmission. To date, no babies born at Stony Brook to HIV-positive mothers were infected.
