Welcome
Welcome to our Stony Brook OB GYN DEI website! We are working towards creating a more diverse environment in order to eliminate inequities seen in our current sexual and reproductive healthcare systems.
We acknowledge the structural racism that exists within the current framework of our medical system. We are aware that the current medical system creates barriers for marginalized communities to access care. We strive through our ongoing initiatives to eliminate those barriers and create a welcoming environment where to persons from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds are respected, understood, and embraced.
As part of our efforts to promote inclusivity, our department has expanded our presence in the LGBTQIA community. We provide a nurturing environment where staff and providers can feel comfortable expressing themselves as well as provide a non-judgmental, safe space for patients. We acknowledge the barriers of health care that exist to the gender and sexual diverse individual and are actively breaking down those barriers.
Please explore the rest of the website to see how you can become an LGBTQIA ally.
The Dept of OB/GYN at Stony Brook upholds the overarching mission of the University:
“To promote policies and initiatives that serve to create a welcoming environment for all students, staff, faculty, clinicians and administrators. We continually work to achieve this goal through education, community outreach and research.“
A valued part of the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI) committee is the support of the LGBTQIA population. Our LGBTQIA initiative includes the following values: community, acceptance, and pride. All individuals are welcomed and respected regardless of their gender or sexual diversity. Our mission is to increase staff, student and provider education; create a safe and welcoming environment for patients to obtain proper health care; and increase our community outreach and volunteer efforts.
The goals of the DEI Committee include:
- Empowering a vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Department
- Advancing health equity in our clinical services and in the communities we serve
- Adapting a data-driven approach for continuous improvement and accountability around DEI efforts;
- Supporting the recruitment, development, and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and learner Community
- Providing a supportive and accountable work environment
