Teens Need Gynecologists Too

Specialty Gynecology for Young People

Teens need gynecologists too

When young people seek gynecological care, especially for the first time, they need doctors and other skilled healthcare providers who are trained to understand and treat them with kindness, compassion and respect. Teens and children are not small adults. They require care that’s age appropriate and sensitive to their emotional needs and the needs of their developing bodies.

That’s why Women’s Health Services at Stony Brook Medicine is pleased to offer Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology – a specialty practice designed specifically to address the questions, concerns and reproductive health issues of teens and children.

Our care includes, but is not limited to:

  • Preventative care such as HPV vaccination and screening, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections
  • Birth control and contraceptive counseling
  • Diagnosis and treatment for genital itching, burning, odor and/or discharge
  • Evaluation and treatment for irregular, heavy or painful menstrual periods
  • Treatment for ovarian cysts
  • Fertility preservation (e.g. around cancer treatment)
  • Evaluation and treatment for early or delayed puberty
  • Care for transgender and gender diverse youth
  • Treatment for common and complex congenital conditions of the reproductive tract
  • Interdisciplinary care with other pediatric specialists when necessary

Keep in mind:

  • In many cases a pelvic exam is not needed for the initial visit. Knowing this in advance can help relieve some of the fears young people have about seeing a gynecologist. Exam techniques are tailored to each patient’s age and individual needs.
  • A family member may be present for any part of the exam if the patient chooses.
  • Certain discussions, exam findings and test results will be kept confidential between adolescents and their health care provider. However, it is important to know that if your teen is doing anything to hurt themselves or others, or if someone is hurting them, we will be forced to break confidentiality.
  • We also encourage teens to discuss important issues with parents.

We see patients in East Setauket and Bohemia.
