Maternal Care/Services

Stony Brook Medicine delivers more babies than any other hospital in Suffolk County – nearly 4,000 annually – and there’s a reason for that. We offer around-the-clock access to the most advanced mother/baby care in the region. This includes 24/7 access to maternal fetal medicine physicians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries, as well as 24/7 availability of anesthesiologists who are dedicated to caring only for obstetrics patients. All is delivered in a soothing patient- and family-friendly environment. This makes Stony Brook the ideal choice for high-risk mothers and complicated and uncomplicated deliveries alike.

Our new Labor & Delivery Suite, conveniently located near the Newborn Nursery and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), provides new mothers and families a highly individualized birth experience that addresses patient and family needs.

Facilities

  • Ten Labor and Delivery rooms with private bathrooms and recovery rooms.  Rooms are furnished with a pullout couch to allow up to two adults to stay 24/7.
  • Expanded maternity urgent care capacity, including private exam rooms, a consultation room and a triage room.
  • Dedicated obstetric anesthesiologists, who are ready when the patient is for an epidural, night or day.
  • An EMS division trained in labor and delivery in case the baby is born during transport to Stony Brook.
  • Three state-of-the-art operating rooms, two holding rooms for pre-operative procedures and a two-room enclosed recovery suite, plus six recovery spaces for post-operative patients.

  • Latest generation equipment, including new anesthesia and fetal monitoring machines
  • Ultrasound and other monitoring available in the suites
  • 24/7 coverage by obstetrics and anesthesia residents, fellows and faculty to ensure that physician expertise is always at hand.

Individualized, Hands-On Care

With a low nurse-to-patient ratio, which ensures hands-on care and ongoing patient education, we focus on delivering the kind of proactive care that prepares you and your family for the changes in their lives following the birth of your child. This includes:

  • Practices that foster family bonding, including rooming in and skin-to-skin contact.
  • A lactation consultant in the unit who can help mothers who choose to breastfeed get started. We are part of the New York State initiative to promote breastfeeding.
  • Access to support staff, including chaplains, psych nurses and social workers who can work with patients in crisis or connect them with appropriate resources upon discharge.
  • A variety of patient education classes and support groups, including prenatal care, newborn care, breastfeeding and sibling education.

The Midwife Option
